1. No backlight (reflective LCD)

Principle: Utilizing ambient light reflection without actively emitting light.

Disadvantage: Completely invisible in low light environments.

Applicable scenarios: calculators, electronic watches, outdoor instruments, devices that are extremely cost sensitive and have stable ambient light.

2. LED backlight (mainstream solution)

Principle: Use LED beads to illuminate the LCD from the side or bottom.

Disadvantages: Relatively high power consumption (several mA~tens of mA), slightly thicker than without backlight.

Applicable scenarios: The vast majority of indoor equipment - medical, industrial control, home appliances, POS machines.

3. EL backlight (electroluminescence)

Principle: Fluorescent powder is sandwiched between two layers of electrodes, and AC high voltage (100V AC) is applied to emit light.

Advantages: Very thin (<0.4mm), soft and uniform light, no dotted or edge dark areas, low power consumption (about 1-2mA @ 100V).

Disadvantages: Requires dedicated inverters (increases cost and volume), low brightness, short lifespan (about 3000-5000 hours), single color (mainly blue-green).

Applicable scenarios: early mobile phones, ultra-thin devices, applications that have extreme thickness requirements and do not mind driving complexity.
